The Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership
May 19, 2020 - 2 minutes read - Business Management, Thought LeadershipEmotional intelligence in a time of a crisis is refreshing and inspiring.
I recently read a story about a CEO who was about to go bankrupt or lay off 200 of his employees.
Due to a recent loss in millions of recurring revenue because of the pandemic, this CEO was left with these 2 terrible choices.
He didn’t want to do either.
So what did he do?
He asked his employees.
He explained the current situation and asked for their thoughts.
This is a classic example of emotional intelligence.
Instead of just making a rash decision by himself, he went to his employees and asked them.
And an amazing thing happened…
…People started volunteering to give up part of their salary.
Now the company can operate for months longer without having to worry about filing for bankruptcy or laying off hundreds of employees.
Hopefully, it’s a permanent solution, but even if it’s temporary it gives the company a much better shot at survival.
This CEO went about his situation in a totally different way than what most business owners are doing.
Now, he has an amazing relationship with these loyal employees.
AND he can operate for another 9-12 months to not have to worry about filing for bankruptcy.
What can we learn from this?
Be honest and transparent with everyone.
Be vulnerable.
And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
